Love the LORD, all you his saints! The LORD preserves the faithful
but abundantly repays the one who acts in pride.
(Psalm 31:23 ESV)
Faithfulness is another ‘fruit of the Spirit trait’. In praying for faithfulness for my kids I am aware that true faithfulness is a divine attribute and so needs to come through the Holy Spirit, it cannot be taught to a child apart from God (though it can obviously be modelled).
A sad reality for many children is that the divine origin of faithfulness means many adults in their lives lack it. Our natural human default is unfaithfulness and the devastated relationships resulting from this are displayed in all areas of our society.
So when I pray for my kids to know faithfulness in their lives, I am partly praying for myself and my wife – that we remain faithful to each other. This is good, we have good intentions but we are weak as everyone else is so need help to do this holy work.
Seeing faithfulness is what I want for my children. Even more, I desire for them to be faithful. That they will be true to their word, making good on the commitments they make, standing alongside their friends during tough times, and always, always being faithful to Jesus.
Plenty to be praying about there I think!
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,
(Galatians 5:22 ESV)
