“…give, and it will be given to you. Good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap. For with the measure you use it will be measured back to you.”
(Luke 6:38 ESV )
Often we think of generosity in terms of money and possessions. However, Jesus calls us to love our neighbours as ourselves, sharing all of life – joy, love, compassion, bread. Freely we have received, freely we should give (see Mark 12:31 and Matthew 10:18).
In this respect children are a good example to us; when a child gives they tend to give all of themselves, they give with joy and in doing so give joy. Obviously children naturally differ in how generous they are and all children go through phases of more of less selfishness or generosity.
For my kids I pray that Jesus will cause them to grow more and more like Him in His generosity. I am also asking God to keep reminding me of how all-encompassing generosity is. My own selfishness is more entrenched than that of my children.
